Assignment #1 Using your life experiences, you will begin to recognize the ways in which your life and behavior have been influenced by ethnic heritage; and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of ethnic heritage in shaping behavior, beliefs, and perceptions.

Guidelines:

1.     What are the ethnic group(s) with which you most identify. (This might include German, Polish, Nigerian, Japanese, etc.). Identify the country (ies) from which your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents originated. How and why did they come to the United States of America? Were they forced involuntarily? Reluctant relocation? Voluntary migration? Record any religious orientation held by your great-grandparents, grandparents, and/or parents. How has this history for this/these sub-group (group(s)), play into our current sociopolitical context?

2.      How has your knowledge of your family historical context (or lack thereof), shaped your current identity, behavior, beliefs, and perceptions?

3.      Look at the list you have produced. Which groups (ethnic, cultural, religious, and so on) have affected your development? Think about the messages you have received from each of these groups. What are the behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, and values transmitted by these groups? To what extent are you in agreement with these? Which have you rejected and why? What advantages or benefits have you experienced because of your background? What disadvantages, if any, have you experienced?

4.      Cultural bias. Based on the above question, how does this contribute to cultural bias? How do these generational thoughts, values, perceptions play into your own implicit bias?

5.     In what ways might your own cultural heritage affect your work as a social worker? Is being aware of your heritage likely to enhance or detract from your ability to work with people from different groups? Why?

6.     (3 POINTS) Organization and writing structure and presentation, spelling, grammar, subheadings, and use APA throughout, see Purdue Owl.

7.     The paper should be APA and 5 pages (excluding Title and Reference pages).
