Discussion 1 (Tameka)
The organization I chose is Duplin County Ray of Hope.
Email: [email protected]. This
organization is a nonprofit organization made up of a group of Duplin County citizens that have
taken interest in improving and building up the community by using resources to help those in
need. They have provided resources to multiple populations of needy, senior citizens, homeless,
and the youth of the community are just a few they have been a resource for.
Proposal Idea
The service organization I chose will be C: Disability Services: accommodative enhancement:
accessible housing. My ideas are to help disable citizens in the community with adaptive
equipment for safe entrance to homes, or for transfers in home. This equipment would be
specific to ramps for entrance to homes, transfer bars for walls in homes, widening doorways,
handicap accessible bathrooms, and kitchens.
Describing Proposal
The proposal will provide equipment to disable citizens in the community, that had challenges
with placement of adaptive equipment for their home. These services would allow them to live
safely in their homes safely. Placement of ramps in homes would allow wheelchairs to enter and
leave homes safely. Guidelines would be put in place to determine eligibility for program.
Running head: Assignment 1 2
What community needs does the identified program or service of your organization
address? This program will allow citizens of the community with a disability to remain an
independent part of the community. This improves functional capabilities, allowing those
citizens to remain active participants in the community. This program gives them the ability to
access medical treatments, food, and other essential things out in the community.
What would an improved community situation look like?
An improved situation would allow these citizens to be less dependent on caregivers. It promotes
independence. It shows those citizens that the community cares about their needs and wants to
help them continue to be a part of the community. This would encourage the morale of the
community to help those in the community with special needs. For example, allows others in the
community to look at ways they can promote individuals with disabilities to be independent out
in the community. In a systematic review of programming for dementia caregivers, evidence
from five randomized controlled trials suggested that occupational therapy sessions providing
caregivers with education, problem-solving, and technical skills (task simplification,
communication) and plain home modifications improved patient skills, decreased their need for
assistance, and reduced behavioral occurrences among the individuals with dementia (Thinnes &
Padilla, 2011). This program can reduce the need for assistance with tasks that individuals can
perform with adaptive equipment.
What can your organization do to improve this situation?
Our organization can go out into the community and inform the citizens of our mission. We can
look for other organizations/individuals that can donate to other services, and volunteers to help
with equipment installation. We can show the community how imperative this program will be

for the citizens in the community. We can be involved, and work with other local vendors in the
community.
How will you know if your organization’s program or service has succeeded? Success would
be measured by analyzing where the organization begins with the mission’s goals. The goals will
allow the organization and its funders to know if the program is successful at the grant’s end.
(O’Neal-McElrath,2019). When looking at those that have participated in the program, and
seeing the positive changes that it has on them, will show a successful outcome of the program.
