Purpose: To practice summarizing sources. To practice finding the main ideas in sources. To learn about the writing process and what it is. 

Audience: Classmates. Instructor. Writing Teachers.

Assignment Description: 

1) Read “Writing Processes”Links to an external site. by Charles Bazerman from Involved: Writing for College, Writing for Yourself

2) Write down a couple of questions you had about the reading. Put them at the top of your post. They can be things you need clarification on, or critical questions.

3) Then summarize the article using 150 words and at least one quote. Use an in-text citation with the quote.

4) Then answer the following discussion question about the reading:

  • Tell me what you learned about the writing process from this article and from Sandra Malowski using quotes and references from the article to support your answer. I’m giving you freedom to develop a response, but make sure you demonstrate you’ve read with quotes and references.

Evaluation Method for This Assignment

  • A response that scores within the 10 to 9 range has posed at least two critical questions that have the potential to engage and initiate a class discussion. The response includes a clear and direct answer to the question above with quotes and references to the reading. The writing is clear and readable.
  • A response that scores within the 8 to 7 range may not have posed at least two critical questions that have the potential to engage and initiate a class discussion. There may be two questions but, the response may not be answering the discussion question as directly as it should be, or it may not be using an adequate amount of quotes and references from the reading for support. The writing may not be clear or as readable as it could be.
  • A response that scores within the 6 to 5 range may not have posed at least two critical questions that have the potential to engage and initiate a class discussion. The response is not answering the question directly. The response may be severely underdeveloped. The response is lacking quotes and references for support.
  • A response below a 5 is for incomplete attempts at the response.
