MAT152 Unit 1 Project
Objective: Your project assignment is to compare and contrast the temperature data that you have been given using summary values that you will calculate along with a graphical display of your data.
·
Calculations:
· For
each city
that you have, you will use Excel to find the following:
· Mean high temperature
· Range of high temperatures
· Sample Standard Deviation of high temperatures
· Mode(s) of high temperatures, if applicable
·
Be sure to include the units (degrees Fahrenheit) for each calculation.
·
Graph:
· You will then graph your temperature data using
any
of the following types of graphs: dot plot, boxplot, or double bar graph. You can either use Excel or draw your graphs by hand. You must insert your graph into the project.
·
Compare and Contrast Written Discussion – four paragraphs (3-5 sentences per paragraph):
· Your discussion must include an introduction.
·
Introduction (paragraph 1): Describe the topic and data. You do
not need to give specific mathematical details in this paragraph. Sentence starters below (use if needed).
· For this project, I looked at data comparing…
· The cities I compared were…
· When looking at these two data sets, I noticed …
·
Similarities (paragraph 2): Give some specific similarities. Refer to specific values, calculations, or pieces of your graph. Sentence starters below (use if needed).
· When looking at the graphs, I noticed similarities among the …
· The (mean, range, mode, standard deviation – whichever fits your data) were similar. The value for each city was _____ and _____…
· The temperatures in both cities had the same (or similar)…
·
Differences (paragraph 3): Give some specific differences. Refer to specific values, calculations, or pieces of your graph. Sentence starters below (use if needed).
· When looking at the graphs, I noticed differences among the …
· The (mean, range, mode, standard deviation – whichever fits your data) were different. The value for each city was _____ and _____…
· There was a lot of variation (difference) in the ______ from city to city.
· Your discussion must include a conclusion.
·
Conclusion (paragraph 4): What did you learn? What are some big ideas? What was interesting or surprising, and what questions do you have? Sentence starters below (use if needed).
· By doing some calculations and making the graph, I found that …
· I was surprised to see ________ because…
· I expected to see _______ because…
· I am curious (or I wonder) about …
· Personally, I would rather live _____ because …
·
What to turn in:
· You must turn in a
copy of your Excel spreadsheet that shows all appropriate calculations.
· You must insert your
graph into the project that you submit.
· Your project must include a minimum of
four (4), well written and organized paragraphs (3-5 sentences per paragraph): introduction paragraph, comparison paragraph, contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion paragraph.
· This formal project will be graded according to the rubric distributed by your instructor.
· You may present your findings as a formal paper, PowerPoint, video presentation, or by using the template provided. If you choose to include a video, ensure your instructor can read and hear all appropriate information.
